How to bet on sports: the basics, step by step
A bet is a stake on an outcome at fixed odds. If the outcome happens you get the stake times the odds back; if not, the stake is lost.
This guide walks through a first bet on a cricket match winner and covers what to check before you start. The Gambling Prevention Act 2026 replaced the Public Gambling Act 1867 and makes online gambling and online betting criminal offences in Bangladesh. A foreign licence held by a bookmaker, such as Curaçao, does not make betting legal here.

Short answer
How does a bet pay out?
Stake × decimal odds = the return if the bet wins, stake included. ৳100 on Bangladesh at 2.60 returns ৳260. If India win, the ৳100 is lost.

Step by step
Your first bet, step by step
-
Set a budget and limits
Decide what you can afford to lose and set a deposit limit in the account before you deposit.
-
Pick a market you understand
The match winner is the simplest: two outcomes in a T20 or ODI.
-
Read the odds
Odds of 2.60 return ৳260 on ৳100, and imply a chance of 38.5%.
-
Compare prices
The same bet is priced differently at each bookmaker. In our example the margin ranges from 4.8% to 6.5%.
-
Check the bet slip and confirm
Check the selection, odds and stake. A confirmed bet usually cannot be cancelled.

How to read the table
Yellow marks the best price per outcome. The margin shows how much each bookmaker keeps on average: green is lowest, red highest.
What it means: in this example the dearest bookmaker costs ৳18 more per ৳1,000 staked than the cheapest.

Glossary
Glossary
- Decimal odds
- The total return per 1 taka staked, stake included. So what: stake × odds is what a winning bet pays back.
- Stake
- The amount you put on a bet. So what: fixed small stakes keep a losing run from emptying the account.
- Accumulator
- Several selections in one bet; all must win. So what: the margin grows with every leg you add.
- Bankroll
- The money you set aside for betting and can afford to lose. So what: stakes should be a small share of it, never money you need.
- Margin
- The share of all stakes a bookmaker keeps on average, built into the odds. So what: a lower margin means more of your stake comes back over time.
FAQ
How do I place a bet?
Choose a match, pick a market such as the match winner, click the odds to add them to the bet slip, enter a stake and confirm. Check the slip before you confirm, because a placed bet usually cannot be changed.
How much should I stake?
Only what you can afford to lose. Many bettors use a small fixed stake for every bet, so that one bad day does not empty the account.
What is a single and what is an accumulator?
A single is one selection. An accumulator combines several, and all must win. Accumulators pay more but carry more margin: three legs at 5% each cost about 14.3%.
Do I need to verify my account?
Most bookmakers ask for ID before the first withdrawal. Verifying early avoids delays.
Can I set limits?
Most bookmakers offer deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion in the account settings. Set them before you start.
Is online betting legal in Bangladesh?
No. The Gambling Prevention Act 2026, passed on 1 July 2026, replaced the Public Gambling Act 1867 and makes online gambling and online betting offences, with prison terms of up to five and seven years respectively, or fines, or both. A bookmaker's foreign licence does not change this. See our responsible gambling page.
